The Troll
Before I awoke today
the biggest, baddest troll
tromped into my head
smothering love and light.
Betrayed by mind and body
errant chemicals in the brain.
Brawled with beast before
incapacitating pain.
Nourished by negativity
donning robes of rage.
Troll weaves doubt and misery
into cruel shroud of shade.
Can't penetrate darkness and despair.
Can't hear words of faith, hope and care.
Smell fear leaking from my pores.
Taste bile rising from my core.
Troll impounds identity.
Heart howls.
Troll molests mentality.
Soul sobs.
Trapped in this moment
stretching to eternity.
Troll is imaginary.
Yet sucks the living
from my life.

FAILURE
Fear of failure is an eternal flame
burning at my core.
I sought to try something different
was given a new chore.
Pilot light of pale blue fire
shimmers on memories of mistakes.
Kindling of deficiency bursts into flames.
Internal voices ignite arid wooden dreams.
Smoke clouds vague visions of victory.
Lack of confidence increases insecurity.
White-hot coals of stress cauterize creativity.
Combustion feeds on all my senses.
Reeking of burning skin
sweat leaks from brow and chin.
Heat of embarrassment flushes face.
Stoking the pyre makes heart race.
Searing steam seeps from eyes.
Voice melts to choking cries.
Blazing inferno consumes action
dimming success and satisfaction
Resolve dissolves into Hell,
Could not
Would not
Can not
Quit.
Well-meaning friends offer comments meant to fortify.
"You can make it;
we have faith,
do your best and try."
Constructive criticism fans the embers of efficiency.
Poking the ashes of past achievements,
hope drips on the magma of immaturity,
courage surges over smoldering struggles
tenacity inundates enduring doubts.
Success settles on the victor.
Someone asks,
how?

We have an opportunity to create community
find a place for every age, religion, and race.
Humans individually searching for identity
collectively gathered here by design or fate.
Facing an alien future where
imagination dumbs
stagnation comes
abominations numb
sensations succumb.
Each person is vulnerable.
All children are valuable.
How does the future you want feel?
Do you wish for the pursuit of purpose to be real?
Risk your significance
to evoke emotion
provoke potential
give voice to vision.
Heart guides mission
memories teach
dreams reach
expectations become.
When it is believable,
then it is conceivable
for sustainable co-existence
to be achievable.

These simple bits of wisdom come from contributors to the online LegacyLetter Project, the brainchild of University of Iowa leisure studies lecturer David Gould. The project began when Gould invited senior citizens in the communityto share their life lessons with his students; as the project grew, Gould began receiving letters from as far away as Venezuela, connecting not only generations, but cultures as well."From the students' perspective, there's an unsaid need to want to know what's down the road," says Gould. "And the authors are thrilled to be asked. You live 70, 80 years and endure a host of high points and low points to arrive where you are." The site also includes information on how to submit your own legacy letter.
